I’m moving to Costa Rica! 🇨🇷 😉
One of many highlights from last weeks brilliantPurpose DisruptorsReimagining Advertising Summit, was EconomistKate Raworth's talk.
My key takeaway? I’m moving to Costa Rica! (Okay, maybe not right this second, but the thought is planted!).Kate’s book Doughnut Economics made a hell of a lot of sense to me when I read it last year. Far more sense than anything I learnt earning my Economics BSc (Hons) Degree back in the day.
In her book, Kate provides a compass for guiding prosperity in the 21st century. A regenerative and distributive economic model, where people and planet thrive in balance. Sounds like a winner, right? 💚
In a nutshell, humanity's goal is to exist in the ‘Doughnut’.The Doughnut's social foundation establishes the minimum standard of living that every human being is entitled to. No one should fall below this foundation, and be deprived of life's essentials, such as food, water, gender equality, and political voice.
The ceiling of the Doughnut is an ecological one, based on the nine planetary boundaries framework. These boundaries define Earth's critical life-supporting systems and the limits of pressure that these systems can withstand. To maintain a stable environment with fertile soils, healthy oceans, a protective ozone layer, ample freshwater, and abundant biodiversity, humanity must live within these ecological boundaries. So friends, I highly, highly recommend learning more about her work.
For some practical inspiration, take a look at the companies and cities worldwide adopting the Doughnut approach. Check out theDoughnut Economics Action Lab (DEAL)and see where it takes you. And follow thePurpose Disruptors too, as they reshape the Advertising Industry for the future!
With some companies (and countries) pulling back on their sustainability commitments this year, Kate’s message was a great reminder to keep acting with the long term in mind, and be ready to seize the moment. To focus on the ‘new shoots’ of positive environmental and social change, and to not give our energy to the things (and people) that are blocking this change.
It’s also a timely reminder that times of disruption and uncertainty often also serve as the catalyst for even faster positive change and evolution.
